History of EYL Extreme Youth Leadership is a coalition of youth groups whose mission is to provide current proven prevention strategies, advocacy skills and motivation to empower youth and adult partnerships to improve their community or school. EYL was founded during the summer of 2002 by two Midland teens. Throughout the summer meetings were held to form a group and set a direction for the program. The group compiled a list of problems that Midland teens face on a day-to-day basis, as well as solutions to these problems. Education was a common solution to many of the problems so in October of 2002, EYL held the First Annual Extreme Youth Leadership Midland Power Summit to educate seventh and eighth graders. The year 2003 brought new excitement as EYL began the plans for the first ever “Extreme Encounter.” This 2-day, fun-filled event was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in Midland, Texas on June 3-4, 2003. We had students and sponsors from Midland, Greenwood, Odessa and Lubbock, as well as volunteer staffers from all over the state of Texas. At the end of the training each school group walked away with a plan of action that they created to implement in their own community. In October 2003 we once again held the Midland Youth Summit. At the summit we had Aric Bostick, General Echols, John Deering and Brent Blackburn present on topics that were relevant to our Top 10 List. In 2004, EYL held an “Extreme Encounter” for high school and for Jr. high students where youth and adults were challenged to STEP UP and make a difference! In 2005, EYL held another “Extreme Encounter” Youth Leadership Training Camp at Odessa College where students and adults were challenged to REACH OUT and make a difference! In 2006, EYL held its “Extreme Encounter” Youth Leadership Training Camp in Stanton, Texas where youth and adult teams created a written plan of action to improve their school or community and were challenged to SPEAK OUT. Keynote speaker was Mark Sharonbroch from Minnesota. 2007 holds even more excitement as we merge with M.A.D.D. Texas in San Angelo and in Huntsville for the Greatest Youth Training Camps ever held in Texas..... |
