History of EYL
Extreme Youth
Leadership began in
Midland, TX, as a gathering of youth who shared the
common mission of improving their community or
school through education, advocacy and outreach to
both the youth and adults they encountered on a
daily basis. EYL was founded during the
summer of 2002 by two Midland teens who wanted to
share the life-changing experiences they'd had
through similar programs across the state.
The success of EYL is found in its youth-led,
adult-assisted approach to problem solving. Since
the formation of the program, EYL has been
dedicated to empowering youth participants to be the
key component in creating change in their
communities. This model was initially put into
practice by having young people from across the
state serve as the staff and speakers at the Midland
Youth Summits in
2002 and
2003.
In 2003 EYL piloted the “Extreme Encounter”
event. This two-day training was designed to educate
students and their sponsors about key topics, and
then to facilitate the action planning process, so
each group left with a written plan of action to
create change in their school or community. “Extreme
Encounter” was held at the Midland Holiday Inn for
high school and junior high students during June of
2003 and
2004. Due to the increasing number of
participants, “Extreme Encounter” was moved to
Odessa College in
2005 and was held at Circle 6 Ranch in Stanton,
TX in
2006. EYL also began an official
partnership with the
Center for Safe Communities and Schools in San
Marcos to assist with the Texas Tobacco Prevention
Initiative.
More change was on the way, and in
2007 EYL Training Camps merged forces
with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, carrying on the
tradition of Texas Youth Leadership Power Camps at
two statewide training camps in San Angelo and
Huntsville. The partnership with CSCS was
strengthened through participation in the three
regional
Texas Tobacco-Free Teen Leadership Summits, and
collaboration continued with
Teen Life Coach Jeff Yalden after his keynote
address in San Angelo. All three partnerships
continue into 2008 through the seven regional Texas
Tobacco-Free Teen Leadership summits and the
2008 EYL Training Camps held in San
Angelo and New Braunfels.
EYL recently facilitated 2 Training Camps
for 2009 and is exploring further partnerships
with
CSCS and the
Texas School Safety Center.
