Success Stories
Dear Mitch, Reggie & Trey,
I want to thank you for the time, effort and energy you spent in
preparing and presenting at our (now to be annual)
Sophomore Substance Abuse Seminar!
I have one word…WOW!! The
seminar was extremely impacting.
It was high-energy, highly
informative and experiential!!
Those sophs went in to the room not really
knowing what to expect, but they started learning from the minute they
came in. And…they started laughing! In my opinion, the two L’s (Learning
and Laughing) should be a part of all seminars.
The Power Point with all the videos kept
them entertained while learning. In this high tech day and age, young
people need
this form of education, because anything less leaves them bored.
Our kids weren’t bored!! They heard some
stats and saw some clips that made them stop and think. I want these
teens to have a better world in which their own children can grow. And
we CAN change this generation…that was laid out there so well by Mitch!
I think our kids need to have HOPE, and certainly they heard about that!
The card game kept them intrigued and
active! The processing of the game made that activity make sense. We
must
connect with each other and have a “Win-Win” attitude. We ARE our
“brothers’ keepers”! The area of “Positive Peer Pressure” is one that
has been neglected too long. It’s not enough for our teens to “just say
no”…they need to influence their peers toward the same decision.
And, what do I say about the rope game?!
Well, here’s one thing. The other day I was visiting with a student
about the
seminar. I said, “How did you like the rope activity?” Her response as
she looked down at a rope burn scar on her left hand
and ring finger was…”Well, I have this scar. I guess it will always be a
reminder for me not to mess with drugs!” My concern over having to send
a few to the nurse, quickly dissipated.
Mitch, the brief activity that you did with all 400 of my upper
schoolers was truly amazing! They were very impacted by
that as evidenced by the LISTENING! All I can say about those kinds of
activities are …MORE, MORE, MORE!!
As an event planner myself, I know that this
sort of seminar doesn’t just happen! It takes time and effort and energy
to pull it off! And the 3 of you did!! Thank you for your heart and your
concern for young people! It is so evident in your presentation.
And, another impacting part is for them to hear of your personal
stories. When they know it’s real to you…it means more!!
We look forward to spending more time with
you in the years to come! Thank you for your service to young people all
over!
Respectfully,

Fort Worth Country Day School - A
two-day program addressing the dangers of alcohol, tobacco & other
drugs, and how to make educated, healthy decisions & encourage others to
do so.
Day One - Met with the 7th graders
during four different class periods, discussing the effects of alcohol
on the brain, the effects of tobacco on the body, the overwhelming
nature of alcohol and tobacco marketing, and ended with a social norms
survey to be used later in the program.
Day Two - Spent the whole day with
the entire sophomore class and engaged in a mixture of sharing our
stories, participating in fun, eye-opening activities, and discussing
the motivations behind youth substance abuse.
The results of the 7th grade social norms
survey alerted the sophomores to the perception their younger peers hold
of the high schoolers, and combined with additional activities that
crystallized the lessons of the day, the 10th graders created
personalized posters that pledged their commitment to make good
decisions, which they would use in a social norms campaign at the middle
school.
